ALIVE is a Dubai based rock band formed on 11-10-2012. Their main goal is to entertain people and keep the spirit of music ‘Alive’ – They will be performing LIVE on Friday 15th of May on the ART NATION Stage.

Words from the Band: “It all started with lead guitarist Jason Tarun tryin to form a band in his college. He met Sean D’rosario in college and started jamming with him during his free time. He was introduced to drummer Daniel Sequeira through a mutual friend and soon met bassist Rohit Ravishankar through facebook. Sean was their temporary band member for an event called sparks but soon joined the band as a permanent member later. Alive was now a band of 4 but still lacked something in their music. They soon met Keyboardist Keith Roche through facebook. Keith initially wanted to help the band for recording a song but was soon invited to join the Alive family.Vocalist Jacquelline was invited to join the band soon after she teamed up with them for Jashn 13 which eventually lead to the band you see today. Each member specializes in different fields of music which makes Alive very unpredictable. In the end they strive to entertain the masses and make them feel alive.”

Vishnu Panicker

Vishnu Panicker

Vishnu Panicker – Will be performing Live on the Art Nation Stage – May 15th – Opening night of Art Nation 2014 – When we received his youtube link, we were mesmerized by his soulful voice. We are happy to share his talent with the world. From his own words about his passion: “Born and raised in the UAE, my love for music was drawn earlier from classic acts like Michael Jackson and Bonny M. I clearly remember the first time my folks got me Michael Jackson’s ‘Bad’ in 1995 and I couldn’t explain what I felt over hearing it, whether it was love or passion or inspiration. But, it grew in me and over the years, it took me into unexpected turns of life. Got trained in Indian Karnatic music for close to a decade, auditioned for a few world known shows and sang with singers of different styles and versatility. At this very moment, singing isn’t just the fun element but rather proves deeper in meaning. There is a fine line between blinded stardom of today and delivering good music and I guess I’d stick to the latter. I always believe that music is the unseen tattoo of memories within us.”

To widen her creative prospects she also studied 3D Modeling and Animation at LCC in UK, however her main Passion remains painting. Art to her is the fairest escape, because the artist takes the time to create his own doorway. What triggers art can be beautiful or, a balance between good and bad, an inner and/or outer fight to get closer to the hope of the existence of a soulful kingdom within the realm and pillars of reality. The painted colors make an invisible feeling not visible alive. “To me, painting expresses a thirst for things that only God will ever be able to offer humanity, Love being the major one and it drives all the way through the accomplishment of my final Piece.”

Haafiza Syed

Haafiza Syed

Haafiza Syed – Haafiza Sayed’ s work of art is basically a spiritual quest that weaves through her personal, as well as the feminist and socio-political tapestry of contemporary life. Most of her paintings are reflective, and express her inner journeys and state of mind. By applying a poetic and often metaphorical language, She wants to amplify the wonder of the viewer by creating compositions or settings that generate tranquil poetic images that leave traces of balance on the edge of recognition and alienation. She likes to explore the concept of landscape in a nostalgic way, yet sometimes her works go beyond the recognizable form, resulting in its interpretation becoming multi-layered ; she finds her art often traversing between the spiritual and the surreal world. In almost all of her work there is an attempt to explore the emotional and mental spheres of human existence. Nature, in its undisguised form is also a major source of her inspiration. She has regularly been exhibiting her work in various exhibitions in UAE, her works have also prominently featured on International Museum of Women’s websites and exhibitions and has got her global recognition.

Shivani Mathur

Shivani Mathur

Shivani Mathur – is a wonderfully talented young artist from Delhi, India who currently lives in Dubai, UAE. Shivani’s paintings have a life of their own. They are rich, vivid, elegant and mystical. She has created a niche for herself in the discipline of oil painting. Shivani’s brushstrokes have a languid appeal to them. Lavish use of bright color hues in many of her paintings has a breath-taking effect on the observer. In many of her works, Shivani pays tribute to the feminine form, be it in the shape of a woman or Mother Nature. The figures appear as if they know the secret of the universe and are swaying to it in delight! She manages to serenade her paintings and such magic effect is possible only when an artist is completely in sync with herself. Several of her paintings have a potent message; she subtly uses a riot of colors and definite brushstrokes to convey her point of view. Little Shivani was besotted with the world of painting and related art forms. Her aspiration and flair were gladly encouraged by her family. Through her school days she earned umpteen accolades for her work. She followed her dreams and obtained a Master degree in Arts with specialization in ‘Oil Painting’ under the able guidance of her Professor and renowned contemporary Indian artist Mr. Ashwini Kumar Sharma. “Shivani enjoys creating vibrant artworks with lavish use of colors and sweeping brush strokes. In contrast to the bold expressions to canvas, Shivani comes across as a quiet artist who’d rather let her works do the talking.” – Source, ‘Young & Trendy’ a magazine published from Dubai Media City.

Sanjay Thapar

Sanjay Thapar

Sanjay Thapar – Graduate of JJ School of Arts, with 4 gold medals – Exhibited around the world and is one of the most promising young talents – His method of working is unique – Sharp Nails and Plastic Credit Cards replace brushes on his Canvas. In The Artist’s own words: “How does it feel to have 10 heads? Would our impressions of life be any different than they already are? It may amuse you to know that I am in a unique position to answer that! Yes, 10 heads is possible and yes it alters your perception of the world. Often enough, I have tried to climb into people’s heads. It’s then that you realise that the most common face you look through across the street has something most uncommon about it. And boy, is there a better joy than your brush transferring those moments across the canvas? To me, that’s life in its purest form. When I graduated out of JJ School of Arts as a bright eyed lad, with 4 gold medals to take on the world, little did I know that the world is a much wider canvas than advertising. One learns everywhere.

And like they say, there are no good experiences and bad experiences; there are just experiences. When you realise that, you are at peace with yourself. Expression then is natural, uncluttered almost divine. The most natural form of expression then came to be brush on walls. Unadulterated joy has no guidelines; no limits; except those imposed by mansion owners who insist on leaving their walls intact when I change dwellings. And thus with trepidation and reluctance, my brush graduated into canvas.

Like every other person who has held a brush, I seek to express a world beyond the confines of the physical canvas. What you see here is not defined by right and wrong. On my canvas, pain and pleasure are not opposite ends of the spectrum. They coexist. In fact, one doesn’t exist without the other.
I hope you see that and celebrate it. Like I do.”

Prashant Bhatia

Prashant Bhatia

Prashant Bhatia- My name is Prashant Bhatia and I am from Delhi, India. All my friends call me PRASH. Right from childhood I had keen interest in painting and sketching as my dad was a hobby painter. He use to make big oil paintings that use to fascinate me a lot and from there I got inspired and started drawing. I seriously took interest when I was in 8thGrade and decided to have my own style. I love Black n White tone and thought of continuing in that only till now.

My main style of work includes charcoal portraits, landscapes, and abstracts. I always love to try new style and that’s why I started from drawing and sketching and then moved into ink paintings and then finally developed my own style of Black and White charcoal art on frame canvas. My art is about my inner feelings, my inner happiness and it’s about finding a beauty even without colors. Through my art work I try to show different expressions of life.

Safiya Al Shaibani

Safiya Al Shaibani

Safiya Al Shaibani – Safiya is a Dubai-based artist whose powerful abstract paintings emphasize on positive emotions, as her talent mostly reveals itself when she is happy and blissful. Her diverse and moving projects reflect a wide range of feelings though. Resisting categorization, Safiya’s work is responding to her personal affect, while giving rhythm to shapes and exploring perspectives. She makes marks of depth and height, trying to reveal the essence of colors and materialize the softness and intensity of her soul. Spontaneously, she creates forms and surfaces that evoke her memories, including those of her childhood in Oman.

Many other influences inspire her work, starting with her four children, and she paints intuitively. She is not illustrating her feelings; she is giving an interpretation of her thoughts, creating a mood and atmosphere. The viewers of her paintings are voluntarily left to put together the clues, becoming the best ambassadors of the message behind the paintings.

In her own words: “My life is my canvas and my paintings reflect my personality, inspiration and passion for the culture and heritage of UAE.Art has always been a huge part of my life. For as long as I discovered my ability to draw I have been engaged in art. I encouraged my 3 children from an early age to draw and appreciate art and had great fun doing ” Arty” things with them when they were younger. Two of them are talented drawers and can produce beautiful art works.

For me having this opportunity to live in Dubai and experience a different culture has excited and inspired me to further develop my art works. My paintings share with you this experience and invite you to enjoy the experience too.

Painting requires energy, focus and commitment and many hours are spent on each painting. Every line, brushstroke comes right from the heart and is meaningful and purposeful. Life without Art would be dull !  Colour, texture, pattern and composition evoke feelings in us and remind us of feelings- perhaps of an idyllic time. We experience emotions when we look at art and our emotional feelings are often heightened. For me this is an idyllic time and since arriving in Dubai my paintings have become more vibrant and vivid. The colours in the landscape are warm and contrasting very different from back home in Scotland.”

There is Serenity in his works that you seldom see, I as an Art Curator come across many tortured artworks, sometimes the pain and frustration of the Artists life is splattered on the canvas. Starved For Art

Standard

It was a hot summer day in Dubai, when I parked my car outside O concept Jumeriah (one of my favorite meeting places) I had just finished meeting with a difficult client (By difficult, I mean someone who dances on your every nerve) So I was really hoping that my meeting at O concept would be nothing like the one I just encountered and survived. I walked in to find Ramya Sreekumar, SreeKumar and Sapphire Fernandes patiently waiting, they were on time. It was already looking like a good start to the meeting, so I got to where they were seated and we started talking. They were all keen on working on an Art Show that was unique and like no other in the region. They stressed on the point that Painters and Photographers get a lot of opportunities to exhibit but unconventional Artists like Comic, Graphic, Cartoonists, 3D designers, and more are left with no venues or even shows to participate. I completely empathized with their concern and we started Brain Storming, that meeting were the seeds that planted ART NATION.

Power Puff Girls -( L to R) Ramya, Sapphy, Ash, Sonia and Zar

Power Puff Girls -( L to R) Ramya, Sapphy, Ash, Sonia and Zar

After leaving the meeting, I was bubbling with ideas, thoughts and of course energy. So my calls to my events team started and we all became the ART NATION TEAM. The Founding members were, Ashitha Sangeeth, Ramya SreeKumar, Sonia Bharat Kumar, Sapphire Fernandes and moi! (We felt like the Power Puff Girls – saving the Planet with ART)

By now our enthusiastic team had further developed the concept and we all decided that Art Nation will include Live Artists sections where Artists could freely express themselves and paint, draw, built freely in an artist friendly environment.

Fascinating Art

Fascinating Art

We would also open space for Art exhibition, where selected Artworks could be displayed, including paintings, Graphics, Comic Art, Furniture, Lighting and anything that was creative and unconventional was welcomed.

The Pipers at ART NATION

To ensure we were fair, we also decided that Art Nation will have a Performing Stage, where Talented Performing Artists, Rappers, Dancers, Singers, Rock Bands and more could perform and promote their talent to a wider audience.

Brandon Fernandes's Work

Brandon Fernandes’s Work

By now, the confidence in this project was high and all involved were excited to start looking for the right  Venue that would welcome us with open arms. In my mind that we were a shoe in, I mean look at what we were about to offer the world! With so many of us starved to see appetizing Art, I really thought this was going to be a breeze.

So, we all got in to my Armada and drove the streets of Dubai, it was from Al Qouz to Jafza, from Knowledge Village to Academic City, the days turned in to weeks and the weeks well you can gather that this was taking a while. We were out pitching to Venues and sometimes proposing to get sponsors. Wherever we went, we got a similar answer, hey what a great concept but we are currently booked and won’t be able to give you the space for the show.  By now, we knew Al Serkal like the back of our hand and we were well versed with the beach Road too.

Makeup Artists at Art Nation

Makeup Artists at Art Nation

On one of our meetings, we got terribly lost, not because of my lack of navigation skills but by a map provided to us that was out dated and so after breaking a few traffic laws (sorry to any cops reading this, I really had no idea it was a one way) We got to the office of a prospective Sponsor – who over the phone said they were extremely keen to sponsor. So of course, me being the entrepreneur had started calculating the level of sponsorship and made points in my head for my offer to support the deal and hopefully seal it at the meeting too. So my spirits were still high when getting in to the meeting, we were now seated at the reception. We managed to get there on time and now were subjected to wait for what seemed like an eternity, (if anyone knows me, they know the best way to tick me off is making me wait or worst showing up late to a meeting) anyways back to my waiting, the longer we waited, the more everyone’s spirit lulled, but I had to make sure that I kept it together, I along with Sapphire were going to be doing most of the talking, so I did manage to keep my head cool. Finally, came Madame X, so she sat down and didn’t apologize, now I was a little ticked off, I could feel my ears getting warm…anyways, I started pitching the Event details, I went through the dates, the ideas, the whole concept and also showed a video. She kept quiet through the whole pitch, and being a real poker face that she was, I had no clue where this was going. And you all have to hear the next part, she said, “it’s a wonderful event, I will tell you what, I can offer you Donuts for your event!” Believe me, that what she said, I thought I was going deaf and asked her to repeat and she said, I can offer you about 50 Donuts – would that work for your event? I looked at her in utter shock and replied, thank you so much, that’s very kind of you. Let us have a think about your generous offer and we will revert to you!!!!!!!

I think a million brain cells of mine died after that meeting, I couldn’t believe that no one cared for the Starving Artists and when all hope seemed to fade. Out of no where, I get a call from  Leejo Meera Kuriakose a good friend of mine, who was working for none other than Global Village and she wasn’t alone, I also had another friend,  Ramee Indrarajan working at Global Village. I hadn’t even thought of them as a venue till that call. Once I got an appointment to meet their team, I also made a new friend in their Events Director at the time, Mr. Abhishek Mathur, one of most incredible men I have come across, his vision and acceptance to change is overwhelmingly refreshing and its only because of Global Village’s support that we were able to feed our Starved Artists with an Art Show called ART NATION!

Jennifer Stelco - Does 20 Paintings in an attempt to Break a record of Speed Painting! Our months of hard work had finally paid off and we kicked off the first ART NATION for Dubaites in January 2012.

Its funny how things fall in place sometimes, I guess it was important for me to share some experiences, some acknowledgements and some background behind an event that everyone has come to love.

Our first ART NATION was an incredibly successful event with over 3000 visitors in the 4 days of the event and we had 30 Artists displaying.

ART NATION was our answer to our starving artists and this event is coming back for the 3rd year now at Bur Juman.

This write up is a tribute to the Vision of Artists like Sapphire Fernandes & Ramya SreeKumar, thank you for being starved for more, I wish more people had your appetite for creativity!

If you are a Starving Artist send us your details on  w2w.events.dubai@gmail.com

The Young & The Fearless

Image

In a place like Dubai, its sometimes difficult to witness any young talent on stage or even on the Media front. When we launched w2w – which was now almost 6 years ago, we faced the same doubts when thinking of finding talent to perform at our events and we are so glad that we were proven wrong.

Dubai, not only has the most talented youngsters but also the most hardworking and dedicated kids, we are honored to know and have worked with some of these exceptional children. When deciding to write a Blog, w2w wanted to use this space to acknowledge achievements and inspirational stories.

On this space you are about to be introduced to some of the most talented children you will ever see, hear and if you are lucky enough, you will see them perform!

Bianca Pergher

Bianca Pergher at Fashion for All

I met young Bianca Pergher when she was around 10 years old, I was organizing a Fashion Show and needed a talented singer to come onboard as an entertaining aspect of the show, and so I sent out audition details online – I got a few applicants – amongst them, there was one by Teresa Pergher – who said that her 10 year old can really sing her heart out. I loved the way her email was written and got her to meet me at Lime Tree Cafe on Beach Road. I saw this wonderful young child walk in to the cafe and we spoke for a few minutes, before I said, “well lets hear it, why don’t you sing me a note!” without any hesitation, Bianca sang Halo from Beyonce Knowles – and everyone who were at the cafe that day, froze in their seats, Jaws dropping, some picked up their phones to capture the moment. Bianca not only sang the song well, she made it sound better than the original singer, Bianca continued to sing at our events and later she played the lead in one of our Theatre Production, “The Slumber Party Confessions”!

The Shining Stars

After meeting Bianca, we were sure there was talent in Dubai and we were keen to promote and offer opportunities to these young budding minds. So we held a talent show – called The Shining Stars – The auditions were held in Schools, malls and we would go wherever we heard there was talent, our w2w team driving around the UAE in search of little Stars!

Da Fashionista Girlz (Sheena Mae Ann S. Celis, Isabelle Francesca Cueva & Heart Ryan Evangelista)

Da Fashionista Girlz (Sheena Mae Ann S. Celis, Isabelle Francesca Cueva & Heart Ryan Evangelista)

We ended up meeting some incredible children, from the Dancing trio – Da Fashionista Girlz (Sheena Mae Ann S. Celis, Isabelle Francesca Cueva & Heart Ryan Evangelista), these Power Puff Girls train for hours on their choreography, each performance is different from the next and with each year their craft gets more fine tuned. When they are scheduled to perform, they show up to the venue even as early as 6am – to ensure perfection in their performance. They have won numerous talent show in the region and I know for a fact, they are destined for international stage.

Ian Tocle

Ian Tocle

Another incredible talent that we came across was Ian Cris  Tocle  – he is gifted with a beautiful voice, so much so, that when he sings you can’t help but start swinging to his beats. I first met him when auditioning at a Mall – mind you, the audibility at a mall is always bad, and your voice has to be exceptionally brilliant for you to get selected, and exceptional is what Ian is, this inspiring talent hailing from the Philippine can sing in Hindi as well as he can in English! How wonderfully does that represent Dubai? I love that, music doesn’t have a language and we can enjoy the rhythm that has no color or race. Since, working with Ian, he has also gone to winning numerous talent shows, Ian works as a model, singer, dancer, musician and he will soon be seen in sell out shows.

Yasmina Alidodova

Yasmina Alidodova

Now meet Yasmina Alidodova, she fits the phrase – “Beauty with Brains”! I met Yasmina when auditioning for our Talent show through a gentle and nurturing Music Teacher Richie and since our brief introduction, She has been either singing, dancing, or Modeling for our events – as most talented kids, she is a well rounded individual, with a maturity that is beyond her years – Yasmina will be someone very Famous – and if I were you – I would grab an Autograph right away.

 Swayam Bhatia

Swayam Bhatia

This piece of writing would be incomplete without mentioning my youngest model – who started working with us since she was 3 years old – Swayam Bhatia, (also known as my Bollywood Queen) I met her when she was still in her Pram –Her mother who was modeling for us, would bring her along to our training sessions & rehearsals. Everyone was attracted to the little doll who watched us with so much curiosity and interest that before I knew it, she was walking the ramp for our events, she is one of the most hard working child that I know, with Dance, Ballet, Drumming, Exercise and also Auditions – her day is full of activities. She has been on so many stages that I cant mention all on this one piece, she has the confidence that most adults would die for and the most important quality of Sway is that she is Fearless in pursuing her Dreams.

This piece of work is dedicated to all children who Dream with Eyes wide open. To end my little note, I’d like to express my gratitude to all the parents, who not only support their children’s talents but make sure that the world acknowledges these young Stars!
