5 Deadly Sins of a Business Woman – An Entrepreneurs Guide by the Gyaan Guru

As a business woman who has been working in the Middle East close to a decade, its very encouraging to see a rise in females joining the workforce. I love that my gender is being offered the same opportunties as their male counterparts. I see, that there are many women working hard to establish themeselves and rise in the corporate ladder through dedication and sheer will to succeed, these women are truly exemplary and inspiring. One of the most important skills that these successful women have is presentation, they work hard to offer a great first impression. They understand the importance of dressing the right way, So my Blog today will cover the Wrong Ways – so Ladies (and Men reading this Blog) please take a few minutes and review the 5 Deadly Sins.

These points are based on my personal experience and come from years of frustration, looking at young business women making some of these horrendous mistakes over and over again, I have finally decided to stop complaining and instead help by posting these 5 Sins.

1. The 9 inch Heels – Ladies, when you can be heard pounding the floor a mile away before you walk in, that’s never a great start to any meeting, apart from the noise factor, that constantly irritates people around you. The Heels when worn throughout the working day, are bad for your back and your posture. Plus, believe it or not, no one cares if you are taller than your real height, it will never make or break a deal – so stop stressing yourself out and as an alternative,  try a wedged heel, Flat pumps or even Platforms, they are are good  options to wear for work. (Your colleagues and your feet will be greatful for the change)

Messy Hair

2. The Messy Hair – Its great for a party when you have a shabby look, I am sure it adds to your personailty or when you are posing for a Selfie to post online, the hair messed up and the out of bed look can do wonders for your social life however, when you are coming to work and half your face is covered by your hair, no one will be impressed, if we cant see your face properly, people might even opt not to speak to you.  Your face is the window to your soul, so let it be seen, let it shine bright – there are many hairdos that will allow for that to happen, a simple Pony tail, Clipped up hair, an Elegant bun or my favorite the Braids.

3. Too much Skin – Yes, Dubai can get hot, I have lived here long enough to know that but we have air conditioning in our cars, at home, and at work. There is no excuse to walk to work looking like you are about to go Sun bathing. It doesnt matter if you have awesome arms and legs, I firmly believe that your experience is what will work in your advantage more than anything else. My advice for when choosing a shirt, please opt for sleeves rather than sleeveless, same goes for a Short skirt, too much skin is not appropriate and you will be ogled at rather than be taken sersiously. Lets not ignore the thousands of Posters put up about decent clothing across public areas like malls, “your work environment”, also falls in to the same category, its public and therefore you have to remember that we work in a multi cultural environemnt in the UAE and we have to be respectful to the sensitivity of the culture here in order to gain the respect and trust of our fellow colleagues in business.

too much makeup

4. Make Up Overload – We all love our makeup brands and no one is asking you to stop wearing makeup –  I only suggest not to wear a Mask to work. When your face is too caked up with makeup and their are visible cracks forming on your face from the extensive layering, nobody will be able to take their eyes off of you but trust me this is not the kind of attention you want. Try to be smart and moderate with your makeup, it should work to enhance your features not to hide who you are.

5. The Girls on Display – This is by far the worst mistake made by women. Yes it will get you attention but, I am obliged to point out that its not the ideal attention you seek at work. To be honest, its offensive for your colleagues whether they are male or females, to witness you on display. It actually hinders concentration levels at work and it reflects cultural ignorance when too much can be seen. Ladies, the only things that need to be on display are your talents at the work place, let your work ethics be the reason people look up to you and respect you. Be mindful and respectful of your environement when dressing for Business.

The Yoga Experience for a first timer with Sucheta Chadha – by the Gyaan Guru

Yoga, one of the few ancient disciplines that has followers in the millions, not because Madonna swears by it but there is a higher calling for Yoga enthusiasts and after reading about it for years and joining up for group classes, I still wasn’t satisfied.

Then came along, Sucheta Chadha, a good friend turned Yoga Teacher. I have known Sucheta for 8years now and when I first met her, she was a strong headed Marketing Executive, someone who was driven and ambitious, someone I could totally relate to and respected. In the past few years, Sucheta found her true calling through Yoga, and now on meeting her, its like meeting a twin of Sucheta’s – I mean don’t get me wrong, the strong headedness still persists, but the passion and love are oozing out of her is remarkable, there is a constant smile on her face, no stressful energy and most of all, she is at peace. There is a serenity in her approach that’s very appealing. Especially to someone like me, who is constantly wired and restless.

Since, for years I had been wanting to explore Yoga and She being a Yoga Teacher, it was the universe lining up the opportunity for me and without wasting any time I signed up for a private class.

What you are about to read, is purely my personal experience, my 5 steps of learning about Yoga.

When to do Yoga

1. Yoga is ageless – You’re never too old to try out Yoga, each body type accepts yoga differently and depending on your strength, endurance and flexibility you are given space and time to learn. This was a great piece of information when I got started off.

2. Yoga is one with Nature – Since, we are in Dubai with 42 degrees heat out, we chose indoors, however It was a wonderful Yoga room, that had huge glass windows letting the sun shine inside, there were potted plants, shimmering a bright green in the sun, and to top it all off, there were Sucheta’s handmade wind chimes making soft sounds and calming music running through out the room. The natural elements of nature all emit positive energy and it plays an important role, especially when meditating.

3. Important to Bond with Yoga teacher – Sucheta took out 15minutes to just speak to me about Yoga, and her experience as a teacher so far, it was lovely to hear the joy in her voice, each time she spoke about teaching, since sharing is a huge part of what I do, this session bonded us and I knew that I was in good hands.

Deeper Meaning

4. Yoga combines Mind, Body & Soul – This came through, when Sucheta explained all the levels of breathing and their purpose, she spoke calmly and asked me to offer love to all my body parts, this experience was like none other, once you start shutting out your mind and focusing on yourself, your Mind, Body and Soul start connecting and communicating and the positive energy started vibrating through you and all around you. I hope that all of you will experience this, it truly is blissful.

Self Love

5. Yoga is a lifestyle – A true Yogi  is compassionate towards other human beings, towards nature, towards our universe, the nature of a yogi is altruistic, a yogi wants to give back to the planet. Once you start exploring yoga, you really start learning about yourself and your choices.

7 Steps to make Cold Calls, Warmer – Entrepreneurs Guide from the Gyaan Guru

1. Focus your mind  – This is the key to making successful business calls, as entrepreneurs our minds are programmed to be constantly churning and working with a million things but my advice is to focus all your positive energy on the phone call making process. Treat it like a child, that needs all your attention. Silence the cell phone, turn off the Ipad and just calm your mind before dialing the number.

2. Use a Landline – I know I sound Old School but here is my reasoning of why to use Landline over cell phones when making business calls, when you use the Ladnline you are guaranteed 2 things, One, that you always have network. Your calls will be clear to the receiver. Second, your battery wont run out in the middle of a call. There is nothing worst than being on the receiving end of a call that is white noise or worst the phone dying in the middle of your best marketing pitch. So use the Landline when making important Business calls to avoid clumsy first impressions on the phone.

3. Timing is important – Just take a few seconds and think about this one, would you like to get a call first thing is the morning, when you are running over your emails and planning your day or worst when you are home about to have dinner. Well, this is my mantra – call during work hours (Respect that people have lives outside of work). I choose around 3:00pm to make my calls – its after Lunch and its a time when most people respond positively. You can come up with your perfect time to call – as you make calls and feel the vibe.

4. Be Organized  – Highly important, to have a list of who you are calling and also keep a track of the calls made, I use an excel sheet, with a date column/time I called/feedback and when to follow up. As an entrepreneur, who is establishing a new business at a time you will end up making over 100 calls and if you are organised, this process will be a breeze.

5. Make time to Research – A cold call only feels cold when you have no idea who will be on the other end of the phone, with technology at our finger tips – it be a shame not to use this to our advantage- I mean you can Google almost anyone on this planet. Take a few minutes to do that for all the people you intend to call, it will make your conversation much lighter and if you learn something interesting about the Brand or Person you are calling you can use it in your conversation. This will always add value to the call and make you seem genuinely interested in doing business with the company!

6. Be Polite – You need them to hear you out and its always good manners to ask people if they are free to chat before you start your marketing speech. If they say they are busy, kindly ask them when would be the best time to call back, and once you get that – make sure you call/email – on the stated date and time – this will showcase your professionalism which is key to a successful Business relationship.

7. Enjoy the Call – When you are relaxed and positive, it will reflect in your voice  to the receiver of the call. I strongly believe in energy transference and therefore if you are having a bad day at work, avoid making business calls that day – keep it for a day that you are feeling your best!
