MECSC’s Next Generation Events – connecting retail professionals across the Middle East

The Middle East Council of Shopping Centres and the International Council of Shopping Centres host the Next Generation Networking reception in Doha, Qatar at the 22 Million Trees Courtyard – Basement Floor at Ezdan Mall on Thursday 17th of March from 6:00pm until 9:00pm.

David Macadam, CEO, MECSC highlights that “We look forward to hosting the NextGen Event in Doha this month. At the NextGen, we bring together professionals from the Retail industry to share knowledge and exchange ideas. Miss March of the Calendar Girls – Dilakxi Anthony as Rapunzel an interview by Ruqya Khan

As the calendar flips to March a very pretty Conganeege Videshika Dilakxi Anthony graces the page as Rapunzel. In everyday life she is a student at Middlesex University in Dubai studying Psychology with counselling. She is in the Foundation year and enjoys her subjects. “I love to reflect and think. I trust that there always is more to what we see and connect with. I want to help people. I enjoy listening.”


It was (therefore) no surprise that this Sri Lankan teenager who has a mind of her own and not to forget those beautiful, lush and flowing locks of hair came on board the Calendar Girls project with full gusto. “It was more than the fun and glamour part of things – it was all about the concept. The way they brought out a different perspective about beauty and all the stories that we have nurtured since childhood is plain amazing. It was like breaking boundaries, identifying your identity and then being proud of who you are. The main reason I chose Rapunzel is that I have really, really, really long hair, which sometimes makes me feel like a princess. The only difference is that my hair is black in colour and her’s is golden! She is spirited, kind, adventurous, and a bit of a tomboy. I see a lot of her in myself. Also Rapunzel had a passion for art and music, it was her solace. For me, music is an escape from boredom. I play the violin and enjoy the beauty of the notes. It gives me a sense of peace and assurance. So in many ways I am like her – the appearance and also the mind-set. ”


Having long healthy hair is and has been a part of Dilakxi’s identity; it has taken years of patience to grow them to their length. “Yes, I do get pulled into temptation when I see girls my age with different and shorter hair styles. I am a teenager after all! But I stay strong and connected with the love for my hair. Most people think of it as a hassle to take care of but actually it isn’t. I do not do anything special for my hair care routine. I just love them and am grateful for them! It all depends on how you feel about something.”


True enough it all comes down to how you feel about something. Dilakxi pointed out, “Beauty can be defined in many ways – the culture, the beliefs, the century and especially the personality changes the term “beauty.” Beauty for me is mainly what’s on the inside of a person. What’s the use of having external beauty when the inside isn’t? A pure heart is better than a thousand wicked ones, doesn’t matter whether the person looks ‘pretty’ or not. But not that everyone is perfect but honestly everyone has something special or beautiful in them, we just have to open our eyes move out from the general concept of beauty and see every individual’s beauty. By being on this project I wanted to change how people see the term “Beauty”. Not everyone has to be thin and have a zero sized body, not everyone has to have a flawless skin and perfect skin colour. Not everyone has to have the perfect height and or perfect pearl white teeth. Everyone is beautiful in their own way; we just have to open our eyes and heart to see it.”


“For me, a person’s smile is their beauty asset. It brings out who you are. You can connect with a person depending on the warmth of their smile. I think the beauty of the heart reflects in the smile,” she concluded.

Calendar Girls 2016 :

The ethos behind the program is to develop campaigns through marketing and events that promote positive body image in Men and Women.

Calendar Girls had over 14 role models for young women to identify with and inspire from, the personal stories of these 14 women will be showcased in this unique calendar.

Theme for 2016 : Fairytales – each image for the photo shoot was inspired by the person’s own favourite character – the idea behind it is, the each one of us really are, “our own super heroes”.
