Coffee Confessions Episode 5: Is “Fair” really more lovely?

Standard

13.jpg

A locally produced TV show by Woman2Woman on Selfie TV Online Channel. Show offers relevant topics and encourages discussions of issues which are relatable to men and women.

This topic has been discussed, argued upon and debated over for decades. Some blame it all the way back to colonialism, while others feel that it truly does look better to be fair.

We prod and rattle people’s biases on giving fair skin preference and somewhat using it as a marker for measuring beauty. In hopes to open up minds and open up honest discussion on this forever disturbing issue so rooted in our culture.

Here are some of the points our guests raised at the show:

 14.jpg

Tanya Daud – explains how fairness is upheld in the subcontinent; and how she herself has been constantly complimented for her fairness. She describes several incidents where people assumed she is better because she is fairer than a regular Indian or Pakistani. “People in the media industry have to speak up and stop endorsing fairness as a measure of beauty; we should make noise against the prejudices and biases.”

21.jpg

Leejo Meera Kuriakose – she talks about how girls are used as a commodity and how fairness adds value to the girl. The Advertising agencies have played mind games and made our insecurities take over. The obsession with fair brides is culturally ingrained for generations. “As a mother, I want to make my child confident in her own skin -acceptance is the key!”

IMG_8205.jpg

Kalyan Chakravarthy – he explains that men also suffer when they are not as fair as what the society desires them to be; most people judge everyone by the outer appearance. The media industry still believes that fair models, actors are better on screen. “It doesn’t matter to me what color you are, what matters to me is character and talent.”

In conclusion, for me this was quiet a disturbing topic to discuss; since ones skin color is something one has no control over and because of being fairer one gets more jobs, more opportunites, more attention just doesnt make sense. I hope this show will open peoples minds to be more accepting and to stop defining fairness as beautiful – because beauty has no boundaries.

Coffee Confessions Episode 4: Yoga – For health or Social acceptance?

Standard

2.jpg

A locally produced TV show by Woman2Woman on Selfie TV Online Channel. Show offers relevant topics and encourages discussions of issues which are relatable to men and women.

In definition “Yoga” – is a physical, mental, and spiritual practice or discipline, which originated in India.

13.jpg

However in the 90’s celebrities like Maddonna, Gywenyth Paltrow, Reese Witherspoon and super models like Gizel made yoga a part of popular culture. It no longer remained for Indians – but got international attention. From sporting brands to designers, everyone’s’ got in the groove of yoga.

Some took up classes to get healthy; some to find a spiritual path, while some just took it up because it seemed like the cool thing to do. This episode explores the trendy take on Yoga by Dubai based Yogis.

11.jpg

Sucheta Chadha, a lovely Yoga teacher, who left behind her corporate life to take up yoga full time. Her take on Yoga is all about acceptance, mentally, spiritually and wholeheartedly accepting ones self. One of the most profound things she shared, “Yoga allowed me to accept me!”

1.jpg

Urvashi B. D’souza, a devoted student of Yoga shared her personal journey with the practice and also highlights the fact that Yoga changes you for the good, it adds a calmness and Zen to your life; it teaches you patience “You will be smiling even in traffic!”

9.jpg

Rangaji Ramachandran, has an Masters in Yoga, specializing in the science and philosophy of yoga. To him yoga is “Dicsipline” – of the mind, emotions and body. For him Yoga is not a way of life… “Yoga is Life!”

8.jpg

Payal Khanwani, has been practicing for over a decade and is a yoga teacher, she highlighted the balance that yoga brings to life, it allows one to be mindful and present; her advise to people, “Relax before you collapse!”

In Conclusion, I have to add that when we were shooting this episode there was a calmness around us. Each of these lovely people were so patient and caring, there positive energy was evident and was very inspiring. Whether you want to do Yoga for health or to look cool, go for it!

Coffee Confessions Episode 3: “The iPad Generation – Can you survive without WiFi?”

Standard

IMG_9166 copy.jpgA locally produced TV show by Woman2Woman on Selfie TV Online Channel. Show offers relevant topics and encourages discussions of issues which are relatable to men and women.

This week’s topic focused on our addiction to technology, I coined the phrase Ipad – since each ipad is unique thanks to the imprints of their owner- their likes, dislikes, their obsessions and their passions all saved in one device. When you have an ipad – who needs friends – you can enjoy your own company as long as there is good wifi.

When your device becomes an extension to your being – that’s when I wonder if we can survive without wifi?

But is this generation really addicted?

For this episode it was important to have opinions from our teen demographic; which is so engrossed in devices that it really has become part of their personality of sorts.

 18.jpg

Yasmina Alidodova, gave a refreshing and honest account of what wifi means to her generation. She cant even remember when the internet wasn’t so readily available; being a millennial connectivity and devices are an integral part of her daily life and as far as socializing goes, in her age group its very acceptable to be on phones and we (as in adults) should “Just deal with it!”

 28.jpg

Cyrus Mehta, is probably one of the few people who finds solace and peace in disconnecting once in a while. He stressed on keeping a balance and moderation on wifi usage. Something that really stuck a chord with me was when he said, “Use it and don’t abuse it!”

 30.jpg

Ross Jonathan, a photographer for an online website is constantly required to be connected and really doesn’t find it an addiction but more of a change that we all have to accept. He stresses on manners especially in social gatherings, he does find it rude and offensive to be looking at ones phone in the middle of a conversation. It would be nice just to eat a hot meal as it arrives to our table; rather than clicking hundreds of pictures of it to post online and letting it get cold.

 IMG_9140 copy.jpg

In conclusion, I found it interesting to learn, that this is a change that we have to learn to accept but having said that, striking the right balance and not forgetting table / social manners is also important!

Coffee Confessions Episode 2 : “Is thin still in? Your thoughts on Plus Size Models.”

Standard

A locally produced TV show by Woman2Woman on Selfie TV Online Channel. Show offers relevant topics and encourages discussions of issues which are relatable to men and women.

13267972_10154117704580169_6077816726913054115_n.jpg

This week’s topic dealt with a topic that’s close to my heart. I have always struggled with weight and with the ups and downs, came the constant insecurities and self esteem issues. I would look at magazines and watch movies and never see a girl my size it would break my heart – that my body would never be defined as beautiful or be on a cover of a magazine.

And so many girls before me and after me, will never learn to love themselves – So when I grew older, I wanted to change that – in my own little way – I started a plus size fashion show, made sure I always worked with women and men of different sizes, ethnicities and age groups – also got media to acknowledge he beauty a plus size woman can display – bit by bit – its made ripples but I want to make a splash.

Does Beauty really come in a certain size?

 13322184_10154117704335169_6501559382348979339_n

Jyoti Sardar, shared her own personal experience of modeling at the age of 17yrs old. She eloquently highlighted how the perception of beauty changes geographically and negative vibes will always come your way but you need to be real with yourself and let your Aura shine!

 13319797_10154117704955169_83761417433394640_n

Moushmi Bhuyan, a fitness enthusiast shared how health should be given a priority over thinness. The media does have its standards of what it considers beautiful but we don’t have to adhere to that pressure, instead we should work on ourselves. There is always room for self-improvement and self love.

 13319947_10154117703930169_4668286736851837460_n

Komal Chhatwani, a model shares about her personal experience of discrimination due to size. She opens up about, the lack of work and opportunities for plus size models and the media’s constant depiction of unrealistically thin models on the ramp. She believes that change is in the air and in the near future we will see more true representation of beauty.

In conclusion, I found it interesting to learn, that the pressure of being thin still exists, however fitness, strength and well being are taking centre stage. More women are looking beyond the media standards of beauty and embracing their curves.

Miss October of the Calendar Girl Bindiya Kishor Farswani as Red Riding Hood an interview by Ruqya Khan

Standard

11 October.jpg

Some people come with an energy that you really want to catch and Bindiya Kishor Farswani is that person for me. At age 31 she bubbles with the innocence of a child. So warm, loving and giving – she is an artist, a poet, a writer, runway model, a dancer – a creative in every right! The fact that she is a person who has Cerebral Palsy (CP) and she uses her wheel chair to get around does not contain her. She in fact find it liberating and unique. Her sense of humour and love for life always leave room for more. Her chase for happiness is really intriguing because it led her to joy, acceptance and gratitude.

IMG_2929.JPG

Bindiya’s connect with Zareen and the work w2w events do began in 2014 when she first displayed her painting at Art Nation exhibition. The year after she was seen for the first time on the ramp at the Women of the Desert’s fashion show in April. She has danced at the Annual Mad About Dance (M.A.D) dance show, which epitomized the fact: ABCD (anybody can dance). Bindiya looks beyond the obvious and trusts that these experiences of life are not just enriching her as a person but also may serve to inspire someone who may need that boost or nudge when life puts you down.

IMG_2762.JPG

Bindiya’s contagious smile and positive vibes often if not always grace the shows, exhibitions and events that Zareen’s team organises. She was connected with them on a prior project when Calendar Girls 2016 was announced. Bindiya was among the first few who responded and came on board. And when it was time to pick the character she would portray she chose to be Red Riding Hood!

IMG_2755.JPG

Bindiya said, “Well, just like her, even I’m red hot, even without the fairy tale effects! Jokes apart, I chose to be Red Riding Hood because we have much in common. I believe, just like her, even I am loved by everyone who looks at me- not because of how I’m physically but for my inner beauty. In the story the Wolf was a stranger for her, in my life; I perceive the world to be a stranger to me. Being an obedient child who always listens to parents advice on not to talk to strangers, at times like Red Riding Hood, I do begin to talk and get distracted by them. The world repeatedly attempts to distract and compel me to walk on unknown paths of life- some paths were indeed very beautiful as it brought out the best in me, whereas some brought unpleasant experiences. Sometimes the world also attempts to put me on the side track just because I am a different creation by the Master. Fortunately, with all the blessings and extreme faith in the Almighty, I resist their forces and avoid wandering on unknown paths of life. By obeying my elders’ teachings and my inner instincts it has allowed me to do what I feel is right. The second element we share would be courage. She was courageous to first have a conversation with the Wolf without knowing what was in store for her and eventually killing him. In my case, I have the courage to go against the usual norms of the world and follow my heart. The last element would be love for others. We love everyone, be it a stranger or family. Even without knowing what the ulterior motives are we still talk and maintain our politeness with the strangers.”

She added, “I always believe true beauty is felt through the positive and warmth vibes radiating by a soul. It’s the beauty of our SPIRIT that endures and shines like the vault of diamonds, in the one who chooses to cultivate, embrace, and utilize it. To the world, beauty may lie in carrying the perfect body but to me, beauty is how well you carry an imperfect one with the right attitude and courage. Beauty with brains is overrated. Beauty with innocent, kind heart and soul is underestimated. Knowledge comes from experience and going against all odds. So here I am- going against the tides of being a model for this project, Calendar Girls.”

It takes more than just an open mind to understand Bindiya and what she does. The depth of her thoughts, the strength of her vision and the possibilities of her dreams reflect calmness. She believes in honest conversation and realness. “My perception towards everything in life revolves around simplicity, in simple terms, a woman’s beauty lies in the reflection of her inner self. It’s in the manner of how she articulates, performs her duties, loves, smiles, cares, and views the world with extreme positiveness and kindness. In all situations she never lets her self-esteem, confidence, and morals down just because she’s odd one out. Like how I said earlier, it’s in how well she carries herself with all her imperfections in the right manner, which then makes her perfect in true essence. The Almighty has created her with extreme love and passion, hence, only when the woman values and treasures it, her charm will captivate the world.”

Smiling through her words Bindiya concluded, “Yes, I may not be the beauty but I’m surely a charmer! Inner beauty doesn’t need make-up; it just requires a pure heart and soul. I don’t see any reason to not be in this calendar. Even I’ have the beauty and persona this Calendar can adorn and feel proud of. Just like gold when put in fire turns into 24 carat gold ornaments – I too possess some impurities but when mixed with the outside world, in its flame I’m surely going to be transformed into a 24 carat gold beauty. However or whatever I am, even my story should be told to encourage those who are like and unlike me. We are one beautiful creation by the Almighty, be proud of it. Our souls are extremely precious and bewitching. So allow me to flaunt my beauty, make heads turn and make everyone realize what true beauty is!”
