Coffee Confessions Episode 5: Is “Fair” really more lovely?

A locally produced TV show by Woman2Woman on Selfie TV Online Channel. Show offers relevant topics and encourages discussions of issues which are relatable to men and women.

This topic has been discussed, argued upon and debated over for decades. Some blame it all the way back to colonialism, while others feel that it truly does look better to be fair.

We prod and rattle people’s biases on giving fair skin preference and somewhat using it as a marker for measuring beauty. In hopes to open up minds and open up honest discussion on this forever disturbing issue so rooted in our culture.

Here are some of the points our guests raised at the show:

Tanya Daud – explains how fairness is upheld in the subcontinent; and how she herself has been constantly complimented for her fairness. She describes several incidents where people assumed she is better because she is fairer than a regular Indian or Pakistani. “People in the media industry have to speak up and stop endorsing fairness as a measure of beauty; we should make noise against the prejudices and biases.”

Leejo Meera Kuriakose – she talks about how girls are used as a commodity and how fairness adds value to the girl. The Advertising agencies have played mind games and made our insecurities take over. The obsession with fair brides is culturally ingrained for generations. “As a mother, I want to make my child confident in her own skin -acceptance is the key!”

Kalyan Chakravarthy – he explains that men also suffer when they are not as fair as what the society desires them to be; most people judge everyone by the outer appearance. The media industry still believes that fair models, actors are better on screen. “It doesn’t matter to me what color you are, what matters to me is character and talent.”

In conclusion, for me this was quiet a disturbing topic to discuss; since ones skin color is something one has no control over and because of being fairer one gets more jobs, more opportunites, more attention just doesnt make sense. I hope this show will open peoples minds to be more accepting and to stop defining fairness as beautiful – because beauty has no boundaries.
