An unforgettable tour of Lahore with Ahmed Mughal

I had an amazing trip to Lahore earlier this year, in the midst of a huge fat Punjabi wedding, war threats between India and Pakistan, airport shut downs in Punjab and dramatic family reactions on safety concerns; I found myself at the epicenter of the most exciting week of 2019.

A regular day would start by us waking up to the sounds of political fiasco that was being played out like an India Vs Pakistan cricket match on both ends of the media drowned out only by wedding songs. The afternoons were spent by most in the hustle bustle of beauty matters at the salon (A place that hears more gossip than any dramas on TV). The day would stretch out between quick bites and loads of chai along with dance practices and pre events to the main event.

Even though I was thoroughly enjoying the Lahori wedding week, I felt it would be a sin not to visit the city’s cultural offerings; and so I took a day out to feed my soul with some art, architecture and culture. The only place I could think that would give me all of these was the “Walled City of Lahore” so got their early morning and walked in to the office located at Delhi gate.

I was welcomed by warm Salams by a group of tour guides, I looked around and asked if anyone was free to take me around, I specifically wanted to walk from the Delhi gate to Bhatti gate and then back. (The route was recommended by a dear friend who knew the city well).

A young man walked up volunteering himself to be my guide. (So yes it was a surprise to me as well, but this service is completely FREE of charge, The Walled City Authority provides incredibly knowledgeable guides to all its tourists! So next time you are in Lahore, please do check them out!)

It must have been my lucky day, since Ahmed Mughal (My tour guide) that day was as interesting as the tour, so I had to share his story and here is my ode to all the lovely tour guides; who passionately make strangers feel like they are home.

Tell us a little bit about Ahmed Mughal.

My Name is Ahmed Mughal. I have done Bachelor’s in Marketing from Lahore and doing master in political science. I have extensive experience in Customer Service and I had been working in the industry since 2008; representing different brands and then I joined Pearl Continental hotel as a departmental incharge; before joining the Walled City of Lahore as a Tourism Officer in 2016 till date.

What inspired you to become a Tour Guide?

My Inspiration came with the passion I have for the Tourism Industry in Pakistan; I believe it’s the only way through which we can show the world the positive and real side of Pakistan; which is happy and peaceful. I want to make a difference in my own way to change the way people perceive Pakistan and hopefully spread a positive image of our country to the world.

What has been the best experience working as a tour guide?

Every day is different experience for me; the nature of this job allows me to meet new people on daily basis e.g. Locals, Historian, Researchers, Foreigners, Students etc. these interactions help keep me grounded, polite, friendly and approachable to every one. The biggest advantage is in the learning, I am constantly exposed to different cultures and every day I learn something new.

Bhatti Gate

Tell us about the Gates – how many gates does the city have?

Originally there are 12 Gates but actually now there are 13 gates.

  1. Delhi Gate (Existing Gate)
  2. Yakki Gate / Zaki Gate (Original Name)
  3. Sheranwala Gate / Khizri Gate (Original Name – Existing Gate)
  4. Kashmiri Gate (Existing Gate)
  5. Masti Gate
  6. Roshanai Gate (The Only Original Gate of Mughal Era – Existing Gate)
  7. Texali Gate
  8. Bhaati Gate (Existing Gate)
  9. Mori Gate
  10. Lohari Gate / Lahori Gate (Original Name – Existing Gate)
  11. Shah Alam Gate
  12. Mochi Gate
  13. Akbari Gate

Ahmed taking a break after my endless questions

Did you enjoy our walk between Delhi Gate & Bhatti Gate?

It was a great experience to show you around, you were so curious about so many things and I hope I could share all the knowledge about Walled City that I have with you. Also, I don’t enjoy walking, but when you requested that you wanted to walk between the two gates and back, I thought why not, it would be a new experience for me as well and I am glad I did!

I enjoyed how happy you were to see the culture, the history and your need to understand the life of Walled City of Lahore. Walking with you in the walled city was fun and I was inspired by the things you are doing for women, art and culture! Also liked how kind and humble you were as a person.

What should tourists know about the Walled City of Lahore?

Its always great to welcome tourist from abroad but I encourage even Lahore residents to take a tour for a better understanding of their own city; there is so much charm walking through the narrow streets and seeing the life and culture, the residents and once people do take the tour the feedback I get is that they didn’t know so much existed in the city. There is a quote, which is apt: “Lahore Lahore Aye”

Moreover, some locals have gone to other countries and toured but never seen their own City and after visiting the walled city, most of them start promoting it to their friends, family about our city’s beautification and rich history!

We get many foreigners who appreciate the restoration and preservation of our monuments but it will make a bigger impact if our local community also got involved. So I am constantly encouraging Pakistanis to visit these sites as much as I welcome tourists from abroad.

The restoration projects are only possible with hard work and support from walled city of Lahore authority, Agha khan trust for culture and royal Norwegian embassy. Recently some support has also been coming in from overseas Pakistanis who are inspired by this great initiative.

Another fact you should know is that 400 years ago, Lahore was only in between the 13 gates of the city. I have seen some tourists who come to the walled city in search of their ancestors house and at times they find it too and when they ring door bell, they are always greeted with a hot cup of chai and welcomed to sit and share stories.

What are your future aspirations?

I am dealing with tourism in Pakistan along with tourism in Lahore. We have so many beautiful places in Pakistan with so much variety of culture, mountains, nature, landscapes, language and specially Pakistani hospitality which welcomes everyone with open arms. Some places I would love people to visit in Pakistan are Hunza, Skardu, Kashmir, Naran, Kaghan, Gilgit, Multan (City of Saints), Bahwalpur (City of Nawabs), Interior Sindh with Variety of Culture and Religion, Quetta, Gwadar, Baluchistan. We have so much to offer and I want to be an ambassador of a country that I am so proud to represent!

Lakeside SysTrack is a USA based company which is recognized as a global leader in Workspace Analytics. With its 20 years + of existence, it has established its forte in End User Computing and Intelligence.

  • Guaranteed reduction in support tickets by almost 30% to 40%
  • Solid Budget Rationalization- The CIO/ CEO has a clear indication and justification for HOW/ WHERE/ WHY to spend for Digital Transformation.

What do you think sets you apart from the rest of the IT firms in the region?

I have always been inspired by this quote:

“Luck is a dividend of sweat;

The more you sweat, the luckier you get.”   by Ray Kroc

My Company is different because:

  • It works on “Partnership Exclusivity” in the region. Our aim is to sell products only if the specialization of the product is 100%; and the staff is not dependent on anyone to complete the Sales, presales, implementation and Post implementation services.
  • We adopt a Consultative & Buddy Approach to sales, which defaults to resource selling, the consultants complete the maximum deliverables in a single meeting and shortens the sales cycle, there by winning a SOLID trust relationship between Customer & Vendor.
  • Our Vendors/ OEMs are extremely satisfied with this approach and hence we have established a strong strategic tie-up with them.
  • Our consultants have achieved the maximum level of specialization which is exclusive in itself.
  • We have built a comprehensive content library based on our technical and sales specialization. This library can leverage all aspects of the Solution’s lifecycle from Enquiry to Demo to Presales to Implementation to Operations to Renewals.

The biggest advantage of this Library is to incorporate a sense of strong time management, drastically reduce paper work, optimize operations costs and achieve very high customer satisfaction score via excellent customer query response times and 1st call resolution.

“The Hangout with Rushdi” – an exclusive interview with Comedian & Podcast host Rushdi Rafeek

Rushdi Rafeek.JPG

Dubai based stand-up comedian Rushdi Rafeek launches a dynamic new Podcast Show “The Hangout with Rushdi”, as the name suggests the show is hosted by the enigmatic Rushdi himself and invites people from all walks of life to join him in an entertaining discussion over topics relevant to this region.

The show aims to offer platform to topics and conversations that apart from having a humorous angle, add value to people’s day, encourages them to think from various point of views and perhaps motivate them to change their lives for the better. The “main agenda” of the show would be to leave the listeners feeling good.

The Hangout Team (Left to Right) Bashir Wahid, Nicole Barua, Rushdi Rafeek & Leilani Coughlan

To learn more about this incredible initative, I had a one on one chat with the funniest man in Dubai, Rushdi Rafeek speaks candidly about the show’s aspirations.

Who is Rushdi Rafeek?

Hi, my name is Rushdi and I’m addicted to talking and trying to be funny. I am a qualified chartered accountant and realized that I didn’t want to do that as soon as I completed the extremely hard near impossible course.

For the last 4 years I have been moonlighting as a stand-up comedian and doing other things like writing and improv in an attempt to change careers or even just get into something that jolts me out of bed in the morning. Needless to say debit and credits do not do the trick.

I am extremely talkative and curious as well, rather than read books, obtain knowledge or learn a skill on my own, I prefer to learn with another human being through conversation or trial and error.

A short anecdote to cement this trait of mine, after a course ended on one of the advanced papers of accounting I began regurgitating the knowledge accurately to a handful of classmates around the table. Thus, by default I became the tutor prior to the exam and confidently cleared any doubts or queries to test me. Fast forward to publication of results, everyone passed except yours truly. Everyone rushed towards me to tell me the good news as I cried one manly tear because I didn’t have the heart to confess that I had failed.

When was The Hangout with Rushdi conceptualized?

Inception of the idea was in 2016’ish but the first episode was released Q4 of 2018. I was filled with self-doubt and turned out to be a high quality procrastinator. My team was awesome when it comes to their skillsets and input but no one could break my doubtful mindset. I can happily say I am no longer making up excuses and reasons why not to deliver on our passion project.

I consumed endless radio shows and podcasts from across the globe. Radio shows are tailored to people who are stuck in traffic and listen to “top of the pops” which left me feeling extremely malnourished mentally. Podcasts I found were to be hard to relate to which is why I decided to throw my hat into the ring based on the region I am based in as well as me personally, being extremely curious, talkative and generally funny. Ya, I said it.. so what?

How did people take the news of you starting off a Podcast Show? Tell us about your team.

I have a very small friend circle, they know who they are and how important they are in the grand scheme of things, shout out to having Whatsapp groups.

Three of my biggest contributors are Bashir Wahid, Nicole Barua and Leilani Coughlan.

Bashir Wahid is one of the most talented and underrated musicians in the region. Anything and everything you hear is done by him in relation to production. None of this would be possible without him, at least it would be extremely difficult for me due to know passion and endless knowledge. He creates all the music due to copyright laws and even composes our comedy spoof songs which again, I cannot do alone because all I do is sing like the diva that I am.

Lelani - Creative HEad.JPG

Leilani Coughlan, artist extraordinaire. One of the unsung heros once again for The Hangout With Rushdi as well as my comedy. She brings in a different angle for brainstorming my comedic thoughts, ideas for the show and everything digital. Which means our facebook, Instagram, banners and anything else. Her style is something anybody can easily appreciate and once again its her passion that makes everything work.

Our most recent addition is my lovely co-host Nicole Barua who wears many hats; she is an established Food critic, TV show host, Actor, Fitness guru, Model and now one the most bubbly voices on our Podcast. Her positive energy uplifts the show to another level, she adds her quick wit and her unique prespective to the shows content making it one of a kind in this region.

These three are the TLC that makes me go “Ahhh!” in satisfaction at the end of post-production like drinking a chilled lemonade on a sunny summer day

What’s the main agenda of the show?

I am still finding my footing but as most people know, Im all about laughs and smiles. And this has nothing to do with me being an aspiring comedian, I feel the world has enough trials and tribulations I would love to be part of the world that helps us cope and deal with the tough days.

And apart from the humorous angle, I want to add value to peoples days and perhaps make them think, motivate or even leave them feeling as though they are not the only ones who feel a certain way.

Here we go again, I haven’t found the so called “main agenda” but I would like to leave the listener with feel good vibes.

Hangout Team - Rushdi- Nicole - Bashir.JPG

Who would be the ideal listener of your show?

Anyone with an open mind and a healthy sense of humour. I try to be a good host by asking the right questions, adding humour and getting the best out of the guest because I believe in the guests I bring on. Either they can better someone’s day with humour or knowledge of one topic or more.

Therefore, if a listener completes an episode they were intrigued by and is left feeling nothing I would feel extremely disappointed. Minimum they should crack a laugh and anything beyond that I consider a victory from my modest view.

What kind of support does The Hangout with Rushdi require?

I pay an extremely nominal fee for production and artwork from my own pocket. Those two factors for me make the show crisp and of a certain quality that is required to keep a listener tuned in and informed about whats going on socials.

If I receive finance or landed a sponsor this only helps us carry out our roles better and perhaps reach a wider audience. The third expense would be marketing which is required in this day and age with so many options to people. And I have no doubt that something so unique and original will gain traction if put in front of an audience.

Better guests open more doors and again possibly increase visibility and may gain higher possibility for sponsorships or financing.

Being part of the arts and performance industry I don’t believe in paying in “exposure”. Mainly due to the emotion being put into the work. People always praise the quality of the outputs that The Hangout produces, the love kicked it off and the nominal payments I make keeps it going. Without a sponsor or finance I cannot gauge how far we can ride this wave, but I am extremely proud of how far we’ve gotten and do not plan to go down without a sincere battle.

Lastly, what’s been the highlight for you since you began hosting?

Apart from connecting people and building relationships with them, I am going to be honest and it’s going to sound extremely cliché but it’s true.

Even though I wish I had a broader reach and people did listen more, if I have 100,000 listens and not one person messaged me about how they enjoyed it and it made a difference it would not make me feel better.

Right now on just our own and through word of mouth, we reach about 800-1000 listens in a week. I have 2 or 3 people come up to me and tell me that they learned something, laughed really hard or just didn’t know other people thought or felt something that we covered. That helps me sleep at night.

Don’t tell me I didn’t say it was cliché!

“The Hangout with Rushdi” has produced 17 episodes, all are available to hear on Apple Podcast and Soundcloud for FREE; the guests on the show have been from various industries such as Banking, Advertising, PR, Teaching, Travelling, Events, and professionals include, Stand-Up Comedians, Film makers, Artists, Actors, Food critiques and more. The show represents the UAE’s unique multicultural influences and discusses the ups and downs of everyday life with a sprinkle of humor.

“Just Like That” – Dubai inspired play of Tolerance, Acceptance & Love

Try thinking of how it would be to see “Life in Dubai” played out on stage. The same people, the same problems, the same context, and the same amazing stories – all with a dash of comedy! Tall Tales Productions is proud to bring to you an original comedy “Just Like That” (JLT) which is based in JLT in Dubai. The play was first staged last year in April to sold out shows, and received a lot of love and warmth from the audiences. Thus, due to popular demand the show is coming back and will perform four shows playing from the 18th to 20th of April 2019 at The Junction in Al-Serkal Avenue. This multi-award winning show is set to enthrall audiences and give them a glimpse of their own lives on stage.

There is an Emirati writer, a British businessman, a European entrepreneur, a Lebanese airhostess, a south-Indian security guard, and an Indian or Pakistani Investment Banker (you will be guessing the entire play which country he comes from). Mix these up and viola – you have a floor in JLT! All different people, all different nationalities, yet they come together in Dubai, to end up living on the same floor! What unfolds is a clash of perspectives, culture, beliefs, and way of life! Audiences will have a chance to laugh, cry, be shocked, and just enjoy the Amazing story of Modern Dubai!

Priyanka Johri the director says, “Very rarely as a director do you come across a script that you can repeat on stage within the year with it still being just as enjoyable to you, your cast and your audiences! Humbled and overwhelmed by the response the play received, staging it again is nothing like the first time around. Already knowing the love and warmth received, a director’s job is to make sure that the originality and authenticity is still maintained even in a rerun. Getting your cast to deliver the play like its the first time around, with new feedback and character development, without letting the prior responses and reactions affect you is the biggest challenge, even with such a fantastic cast! With an original script like this one, the foundation remains the same but the jokes and references get updated keeping the script fresh and relatable to its time at any given period. Putting up this production a second time is something exciting and I can’t wait to see it come alive on stage again!”

“We received a lot of love on our last outing”, says Asad Raza Khan, who is the writer, producer, and actor in the play. “It honestly was our most well-received production and the awards were just a cherry on top. The cast and crew brought our script to life making it a story which was relatable to everyone who came to see the production. We are proud of this home-grown production which can ONLY be seen in this great city featuring the best of best of Dubai’s entertainment industry! That is what our objective has been for some time now, to bring original and unique plays (like Dubai is) to ensure that we present something new to people, as well as build the local “cultural” depth of the city. Being a story of multi-cultral people living in Dubai, this is our contribution to the ‘Year of Tolerance’ in the UAE. It showcases how all of us live together and in harmony – just like that☺. We are paying tribute to the smash hit play “Hamilton” and “Rowan Atkinson” in the production. Hopefully we will entertain you!”. Asad has won multiple awards both locally and internationally, has starred in Bollywood productions, web- series, and television apart from theater.

Manju Ramanan, co-writer of play mentions, “Just Like That we have completed a year. What started out as a vigorous brain storming sessions on various experiences over gallons of coffee has materialized into this pun and fun filled play that laughs with you and not at you. A hugely gratifying experience writing it with the very talented Asad Raza Khan. We laughed a lot and enhanced each character with love and indulgence. Sarcasm, wit, humor, quirks, parodist – it is all there just like that!”

Layla Kardan, a very popular singer and winner of Emirates woman of the year 2017, is happy to play the character of Gloria in this outing. “I’m thrilled to be part of such a dynamic and diverse crew of actors bringing to life a delightfully funny and relatable Dubai story on stage. I cannot wait to bring this to the audiences here and be part of this exciting journey with them!”

Eric Dury, who plays the British Business man Steve says “A year ago, I was so excited to be able at long last to appear on stage together with one of my all-time favorite actors, Asad Raza Khan. The bonus was a wonderful script, director (Priyanka), cast and crew. Not only was it a positive experience professionally, but also personally: There was a genuine warmth among the group members…And now we get the opportunity to do it again! Something to really look forward to!”. Eric has won multiple best actor awards in the city over the past few years and is considered one of the finest actors in town.

Imah Dumagay, a well-known comedian and actress in Dubai, is excited to be part of the re-run. “Truly thrilled to be a part of the glorious bunch of talents in the re-run of this hilarious, and brilliantly written home-grown play. I missed out last time, but this time I am bringing it ;)”

The shows in Dubai will be performed from the 18th to 20th April 2019 at The Junction Theatre in Al-Serkal Avenue. There will be an evening shows at 7 30 pm each day with a special matinee show on Saturday 20th of April at 3 pm as well. Tickets are available online at and start at 80 AED.

An exclusive interview with Darren Baker the co-founder of “Art London Dubai”

As the world of art collides with the online realm, the boundaries become blurry and the possiblites endless. None know this better than the Founders  of  Art London Dubai   the brand new online gallery launched by the highly celebrated artist Darren Baker and  Dubai based entrepreneur Jason Cook. This platform is the ultimate destination for art lovers of the region looking for an eclectic, mesmerizing selection of original art and limited-edition prints from some of the worlds most talented artists.

Art London Dubai has launched with an impressive selection of UK based artists including celebrity painter David Harper, the incredibly talented Clarissa C James and the inspirational Cindy Lass, to name just a few. Visitors to the site will discover an array of Fine Art, Equine Art, Polo Art, Urban Art and much more to suit a variety of budgets.

To learn more about this incredible initative, I got a one on one with the man of the hour himself, the amazingly talented artist Darren Baker.

Copy of Darren Face
Darren Baker

What inspired this collaboration between you and Jason?

We have known each other for a long time, Jason started collecting my work 15 years ago. We met at a London event where I was exhibiting my work. We clicked, both of us having the Yorkshire connection!

It was Jason’s initial idea for the online gallery as he saw a gap for artists in Dubai, offering artwork other than purely Arabic themed and inspired.

His expertise with finance and digital media and websites, combined with my knowledge and love of art seems a great fit for this enterprise.

Darren’s Official Portrait of The Queen in 2011

Would this platform mean opportunities for Dubai based Artists to also explore the UK market? Or is it primarily focusing on bringing UK based Artists to the ME region?

Yes the crossover between both territories is intended to open up new audiences for both Dubai based and UK based artists.

Through my extensive network and connections with galleries, dealers and collectors in the UK, we can offer ME based artists great opportunities to exhibit and sell the work. Similarly, via the website, and through creating connections in Dubai, such as the art fair and working with social media influencers, we can market UK artists to a whole new audience.

Darren’s magnificent artwork

What makes Dubai so appealing?

It is such an exciting and developing new art world, particularly for western art. Like the country itself, it has a bold and dynamic vision for its future and for shining out to the world. We want to be a part of that journey.

What is the vision behind this platform?

To create opportunities and exposure for talented artists both emerging and established, in new art markets for their work.

To create an experience for the customer that is seamless and first rate, personal and exclusive.

To make the buying and selling experience for both artist and customer enjoyable and exciting.

To give artists a platform that offers them access to collectors in the UK and Dubai, and treats them fairly and ethically in terms of a high rate of commission, allowing them to work and enjoy the process of creation and be fully inspired.

Darren’s beautiful creations

Has there been adequate support?

We have engaged with Department of Trade and Enterprise in the UK and sister offices in Dubai, also the Dubai Embassy, where we are negotiating an exhibition.

Generally though it is harder to access support and funding for the arts compared to other industries. This is a great shame and a oversight when you realize the overall economy generated by Art, and also the incredible wellbeing and sensory effect it has on the artist and viewer alike.

Are you open to collaborations with local artists in the region?

Certainly. We want to create a collaborative artistic platform that engages artists and opens up gallery space and exhibitions for our entire portfolio of artists.

Your advice to artists who are looking to launch themselves commercially?

Always believe in yourself and your vision and keep going. Yes, there will be plenty of rejections and hurdles to overcome but always believe in yourself and your art and love what you do. Keep your name and your work constantly in the mind of the galleries, collectors and media. Generating a reputation and coverage for your work is equally as important as the creation. Knock knock on every door, seize the opportunity, seize the day!

“Towards Abstraction” a stream of words & art by Haafiza Sayed

A Solo Art Exhibition by Haafiza Sayed at Studio Seven, Dubai

Studio Seven Art Gallery will open its doors on 10th of April for a poetic Art Exhibition by Artist Haafiza Sayed; “Towards Abstraction” this will be Haafiza’s first Solo Art Exhibition showcasing her artworks alongside her poetry, opening reception is on Wednesday 10th of April till 24th of April.

Just like her art, the Artist’s poems are closely associated with her methodology of moving away from the obvious and finding meaning in the abstract; the words like the paints she uses, flow right out and fill the imagination with vivid images. Here is an excerpt from

“déjà vu”

We are here now

In this moment

On the cusp of history and future

Oscillating between now and then

Not completely here, neither, reached there

Yet bound by threads woven

In predesigned sequence

A magic carpet following it’s flight plan

 ~ Haafiza Sayed

Towards Abstraction will be exhibiting close to 30 paintings that represent the metamorphosis of the artist’s journey through her art and poetry. The exhibition welcomes art lovers to engage and experience the narrative of the artist’s story telling through her canvas and spoken word.
