True to his words, Mobeen has documented humanitarian efforts and CSR initiatives throughout Pakistan; in-turn giving a voice to the voiceless and an identity to the otherwise anonymous.

The undeniably selfless humanitarian – Abdul Sattar Edhi was also featured in Mobeen’s book – “Dharkan – the Heartbeat of a Nation” the book celebrates Pakistan’s incredible icons who have been instrumental in transforming the country with their talent and service. Edhi Sahib had founded the Edhi Foundation, which operates the worlds largest volunteer ambulance network, along with homeless shelters, animal shelters, orphanages and rehab centres across Pakistan.

Escale’s Revival of traditional craftsmanship by “Empowering Women Artisans”

Workshop India 1.jpg

Escale is an online fashion house that employees women from rural India in an effort to offer hope and opportunity

Escale was established in 2013 as an online Fashion brand with a passion for reviving traditional crafts. For the last three years the brand has collaborated with Design Deals at the Zoroastrian Welfare association in Ahmedabad in India and Amar Foundation for the widows of war in Iraq to offer employment and hope to women who have limited or close to no other source of income.

Ferzin Irani – Founder of Escale explains “When we began employing women artisans, it was initially challenging to train women to keep up with the production schedules & maintain international standards of quality but we didn’t consider it as a hurdle but rather an opportunity to make a difference. The idea was to firstly, offer women financial independence by creating a source of income for them and secondly we wanted to save and revive old traditional designs, embroidery’s and stitches.”

Escale has 5 full time artisans & many freelancers who come in to the workshop on a per day basis. These could range from eight to twelve persons at a day depending on their domestic commitments, therefore the company remains flexible to continuously offer more employment opportunities to women and looks forward to establishing Escale as a globally recognized brand with a conscience. Currently Escale is working on several projects, which are under the research & development process. One of them is to revive the old Parsi craft of Gara back in to mainstream fashion.

Baisakhi (2).jpg
Baisakhi Festival in Pakistan  – photographed by Mobeen Ansari

“Whether it was witnessing colours of Holi at the many mandirs in Tharparkar, or listening to hymns at the Sunday mass at Saint Anthony’s church in Lahore, to or joining in on the festivities of Chowmos – a Kalash festival – I have been able to see, capture and celebrate diversity. By interacting with the communities (I prefer not to call them minorities), I have learnt more about my country and religion than I have from any other experience.” ~ Mobeen Ansari (Photojournalist and Author of White in the Flag)

Mobeen Ansari profile (5).JPG

Mobeen Ansari explains the background about this exhibition, “As a photographer in Pakistan, what gives me immense joy, is to travel across the country, to far flung places and every nook and cranny, and take photos of the diverse cultures, landscapes and history- and bring them to the world. Pakistan for me is like a country of many countries, and in my 17 years as a photographer I have captured diversity of the land; which has a history and histories dating back centuries. Many conversations took place across the Himalayas, deserts, forest and places of worship for all of Pakistan’s existence, and beyond. This experience for me was also like traveling back in time, and attempting to bring back some of the folklore to life; hence the title – Conversations Through Centuries”.

“Conversations through Centuries”, at Studio Seven Gallery in Dubai will be the starting point of Mobeen’s series of exhibitions and seminars in the region, followed by Xposure in Sharjah and concluding the solo exhibition at Eithad Modern Art Gallery in Abu Dhabi during his UAE tour in September 2019.
