“Annual Summer Chillout 2021 Global Concert” Music for a cause

The Gulf Youth Chamber Music Society (GYCMS) is launching an online concert “Annual  Summer Chillout 2021 Global Concert” on 7th August (7PM GST) via YouTube Premium

Summer Chillout 2021 is an online concert for a cause to celebrate 8th year Anniversary of the non profit organization, 4get-me-not Alzheimer’s; the concert will offer support to the ongoing community initiative “Chocoholics” Grief Support Group for seniors and caregivers who are extremely affected by the loss of their loved ones specially during the pandemic. This concert is a collaborative effort by 4get-me-not Alzheimer’s and the Gulf Youth Chamber Music Society.

The online concert will showcase 17 youth musicians from 8 cities (representing 7 countries: UAE, USA, UK, South Korea, Japan, Philippines, & India) including an array of special guest musicians from the Juilliard School of Music in New York.

As a musician, I learned so much about how music & the brain are intrinsically connected, further establishing the significant role that music plays within all of us. Eljin Yoo has performed for 4get-me-not since he was 12 years old together with other teen musicians based in Dubai.  Eljin recalls amazing work of Desiree Vlekken, Founder of 4get-me-not who organized over 100 social initiatives for over 500 senior beneficiaries across the emirates.

The concert’s goal is to raise awareness and help sustain Chocoholics grief support group initiatives along with Art & Music classes, Badminton and age-friendly sports sessions, Meditation and Sound Healing as a holistic strategy in coping with grief.

This event is co-presented by Alzheimer’s Disease International (ADI), the international federation of Alzheimer and dementia associations around the World; in official relations with the World Health Organization.

4get-me-not, is a social enterprise raising awareness on Alzheimer’s disease and promoting quality of life for seniors and caregivers in the UAE since 2013. The Founder, Desiree Vlekken was inspired by her father who had Alzheimer’s and mother as fulltime caregiver.  Both passed away early this year from complications of Alzheimer’s and Covid-19.

“Elysian Pudava” a haven for artisans by Sandhya Rajan

The concept of establishing Elysian Pudava was first and foremost to support artisans & weavers based in the sub continent and to save the dying art of handloom sarees. Selfie TV to release “Identity / Pehchaan” a documentary on the multitalented photographer Mobeen Ansari

Dubai based online channel and production house Selfie TV is all set to launch the much-awaited documentary on one of Pakistan’s most prominent photographers, Mobeen Ansari. The documentary follows the work and personal life journey of Mobeen Ansari, who is widely celebrated for his portrayal of Pakistan’s landscapes, people and stories. His work has been exhibited worldwide, including Canada, China, Italy, India, Iraq, Pakistan, Qatar, United States, United Kingdom and the United Arab Emirates.

Sahar Mahmud – Selfie TV says, “Pehchaan is an Urdu word, and in English it means “Identity”. The title came long after the documentary was complete. We wanted a word that spoke about the essence of this film and we realized while compiling Mobeen’s work that he is in a constant state of connecting to his roots. His own story lies within the stories of the people, places and historic sites that be captures so beautifully. This has been a journey for us as well, since the time we began filming in 2019 until today when we are about to release the film. We are grateful to tell the story of one of the most phenomenal storytellers of our times.”

Being part of this documentary was also a journey that helped me better understand not only my work, but myself as a person and it was a deep dive into some of my most memorable journeys and encounters that I was able to share through this film. We filmed the documentary, whilst I was showing my work in the UAE. It was nothing short of an adventure working with team Selfie TV and W2W events for this documentary and experiencing the hospitality of Dubai. I have always attempted to explore my own identity, by traveling and photographing heritage sites, culture and people across the country. It is an ever-evolving journey that continues today” adds Mobeen Ansari

The Documentary is titled “Identity” / “Pehchaan”. The filming of the documentary began in September 2019 when Mobeen was in the UAE for his solo exhibitions and the work continued over a span of two years and will be released on Selfie TV’s channel on 3rd of July 2021.

Mobeen has also authored two books. His first one, ‘Dharkan: The Heartbeat of a Nation’, features portraits of iconic people of Pakistan from all walks of life and his second book, called ‘White in the Flag’ is based on lives & festivities of religious minorities of Pakistan. As a filmmaker, his two films include ‘Hellhole”, which is an award wining black and white short film, based on the life of a sanitation worker, and “Lady of the Emerald Scarf” is based on the life of Aziza, a carpet maker in Hunza.

Special “Art class” for seniors by renowned artist Anjini Laitu

79yr old artist Anjini Laitu will conduct an exclusive art class on 6th of June at DIAC for seniors of 4get-me-not

Dubai International Art Centre offers space to host a special art class for seniors of 4get-me-not on 6th of June at 1:30pm. The talented Sharjah based artist Anjini Laitu will facilitate the session. The art class will be held for 10 -12 members from 4get-me-not; offering the seniors the opportunity to explore arts and create their very own hand-painted T-shirts to take back home with them.

Giving wings to his life-long dream of being an artist at the age of 60, post retirement, Anjini Laitu embodies the fact that it is never too late to pursue your passion.

The session was conceptualized and bought together by Tessy Koshy an independent journalist based in Dubai, with over 20yrs experience who had previously shared Anjini’s story with UAE readers and also offers support to the non profit organization 4get-me-not.

“Tessy introduced me to the wonderful group 4get-me-not and encouraged me to share my own personal experience with the members. I had been fond of Arts and wanted to be a painter, but in my younger days it was not considered as a conventional career & my parents did not agree. The vacuum of not doing anything for Art remained deep in my heart. I myself picked up the brush to paint at the age of 60yrs, after retiring from my job; in the beginning I painted on everything, from fabric to porcelain and then canvas but in 2013 – 2014, I decided to choose canvas as my medium of spreading joy with colors.

Doing this session will be a sheer pleasure to share my experiences with them and learn from them as how they feel about this change because life is a celebration of change” explains Anjini Laitu – Artist

Sahira Ameen – The Manager of the Dubai International Art Centre adds, “We appreciate the work that 4get-me-not is doing for seniors in the UAE and are extremely happy to host the session for 4get-me-not at our venue. The art centre was built to offer the community a safe space to explore all forms of art and encourage creative endeavors.”

The art class for 4get-me-not will be held on Sunday 6th of June from 1:30pm till 2:30pm at the Dubai International Art Centre. The session will be free of cost for senior members of the organization and will be conducted by Anjini Laitu, followed by a talk on his artistic journey.

The Arabian Courtyard Hotel & Spa, is inviting aspiring chefs to its annual Biryani Muqabla competition, to be held at the award-winning Mumtaz Mahal Indian Restaurant on 29th May 2021.

Ten lucky finalists will get the chance to show off their culinary skills to a panel of judges comprising renowned food critics, writers and chefs. The competition is open to all aspiring chefs, they will be judged on preparation and presentation of their Biryani dish. The winning Biryani recipe will be added to the official Mumtaz Mahal Restaurant menu offering diners a chance to taste the delectable dish.

“Chocoholics” – a grief support group in the UAE launched by 4get-me not

Chocoholics –“ Life is sticky but sweet”

The founder of 4get-me-not Desirée Vlekken recently launched “Chocoholics” a grief support group, with a purpose to provide seniors and caregivers who are living with grief, a safe environment to share, connect and heal. The group plans to meet monthly, over a hot cup of chocolate and share their personal journeys.

Desirée Vlekken – founder of 4get-me-not says “I felt compelled to start Chocoholic; since there are many senior and caregivers in our organization that are hurting from losing a loved one. Most often, whenever we have a group activity or gathering; someone from the group would volunteer a personal story about the husband or wife or child they have lost.  I thought it would make perfect sense to introduce a platform where seniors/caregivers would have a safe space to share, grieve and move forward. On a personal note, I carry my own heavy grief; I have recently lost my dad (79yrs) last 20th Jan 2021 from Pneumonia and complications of Alzheimer’s.  And about 1 week after launching Chocoholics, I lost my mom (81yrs) from battling Covid. I was unable to attend their funerals due to travel restrictions to Manila.”

The group’s name Chocoholics – “Life is sticky but sweet” was inspired from learning about the benefits of consuming dark chocolate, which helps with memory, blood pressure, and act as a mood enhancer whilst alleviating depression and it also has anti-inflammatory properties, which is good for the brain. This is what Chocoholics intends to achieve, for its participants to heal, one chocolate at a time.  

Chocoholics held its first meeting earlier this month with 6 participants. The program ensures that everybody gets a chance to speak.  The program moderator was Kim Smith, an Inclusion specialist for people of determination and book reviewer; her background enables her to manage delicate topics such as grief and mourning. Before the end of the session, each participant created a one-page collage with a photo of a loved one with colours and special messages. This will be filed and stored in the Chocoholics Time Capsule.

“It was vital to create a sweet and safe environment where we start each session with a cup of hot chocolate. People who are grieving (like myself) can feel detached and this needs to be addressed and enable us to be functional again” adds Desirée Vlekken – founder of 4get-me-not

If anyone is over 60yrs + and would like to attend one of Chocoholic’s monthly group meetings, they can email the team at info@4get-me-not.org to register. In order for the group to continue the group meetings, it needs support through Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) sponsorships. This will enable Chocoholics to hold meetings twice a month, subsidize refreshments for participants, materials and offer a stipend for program Moderators.

Creamy Melts was launched 12 years ago in UAE, by Rajeena Mohammed a Certified Cake Artist-PME Knightsbridge. 

Our Business Woman of this week is the passionate Cake Artist “Rajeena Mohammed”, I have had the pleasure of meeting Rajeena a few years ago for an event; her positive energy is contagious and she was my go to baker for cakes, cupcakes, cookies and brownies.
